In class exercise: 

 

Download and install the 30-day evaluation version of HotDocs 6 from www.hotdocs.com.  Save the download file to your desktop!  It will take approximately 5 minutes to fill in the download form and complete the download.  Install HotDocs as follows:

 

          Close all applications, including your web browser.  Double click the hd6demo.exe icon on your desktop. Here are the choices to pick from the installation screens:

          *           Typical install

          *           Use the default destination

          *           Word processors:  leave all that it finds checked

          *           Installation complete:  Don’t check either box.  Click Finish.

 

Load Microsoft Word.  The class will review the sample templates, and assemble a document.

In class exercises: 

 

Launch HotDocs from the icon on your desktop.  We will then do the following together:  Create a new library in HotDocs.  Automate a Word document.  Here are the steps:

1.             Download the Statement of Risk.doc from http://www.absims.com/client/emu/emu 2003 files.htm to your my Documents folder.

a.                Right-click the file and select Save Target As.

2.             Open MS Word XP, if you haven’t already.

3.             Open the Statement of Risk.doc

4.             Launch HotDocs

5.             Select File, New Library to create a new library called Adoptions.

6.             Select Template, New.  Leave the default file type (Word.rtf).  For filename type Statement of Risk. 

7.             Click the Title Box.

8.             Leave the Description box blank.

9.             Initial contents:  select Current open word processor file.

10.       Click OK.  HotDocs will create your template.

11.       Substitute the blank lines with these fields, using the Insert Field button <<  >> on the HotDocs toolbar:

a.                Name of Adopting Parents

b.               Name of Child

c.                Child’s Birthdate

12.       Save and close the template.

13.       Close the original Statement of Risk.doc.

14.       Assemble the document.  At the end of the interview, send the document to your word processor.

15.       Save your answers to a file with your name, e.g. Robert.ans.

16.       Review the assembled document, then close it without saving.

17.       Assemble the document again using the same answer file, this time changing the name of the parents.

18.       How would you handle these words in the document:

a.                I/We

b.               Am/are

c.                Parent(s)

 

19.       How can you tell the template from the assembled document?

20.       Add a True/False “ASK” field called Two Parents?

21.       Create an IF statement to control whether “are” prints “are” or “am”, “person” is singular or plural, “based on the answer to the Two Parents field.

a.    Create a dialog that asks all of the questions. Open the Component Manager

b.   Select Dialog

c.    Add New Component

22.       Download a form from the LexisNexis Forms Library if time allows.  Add it to your adoptions library.

 

 

Use LexisNexis Michigan Automated Forms on HotDocs to prepare a fill-in form document.
